Provided Disney holds firm on that May 1 release date (the week prior overseas), we’re around seven weeks out from the next chapter in the MCU. Point being, if Black Widow “only” earns The Winter Soldier-level money (give or take China), then that shouldn’t be seen as a miss. Of the various non- Avengers movies, only Black Panther and Captain Marvel have grossed even $900 million let alone $1 billion without at least the spiritual presence of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man (Tony’s still dead in Spider-Man: Far from Home, but they can’t shut up about him). That was a big win, but it was yet another example of a ceiling for non-Tony Stark MCU flicks up to that point. That it’s one of the more popular MCU movies and a fine example of melding real-world action and Marvel characters is almost a bonus. If Civil War was Steve Rogers’ sequel to The Winter Soldier, then Black Widow is being sold as Natasha’s proper follow-up to that beloved 2014 blockbuster.

She was as much the comic relief (the droll sense of humor is a big part of why she’s a fan favorite) as she was “the girl.” It makes sense to get folks excited about the Black Widow movie by reminding them of what could be Natasha’s finest moment in the MCU.
